Condoms

Does my partner have to wear a condom when we have sex after my chemotherapy treatments?

Some doctors recommend that in the first day or two after your chemotherapy treatments, that your partner use a condom when you have sex. A condom protects the penis from your vaginal secretions, which may contain a very low level of chemotherapy drugs. After chemotherapy your body eliminates the chemotherapy in several ways — through the urine, feces, and other secretions, including vaginal secretions. The low level of drugs that may be in your vaginal secretions for a day or two after treatment could potentially could irritate the penis of your partner.
