Dealing With Mastectomy During Sex

How can my partner and I deal with my mastectomy during sex?

Having a mastectomy can have a major impact on a woman’s body image, but it does not mean that she cannot continue to have a rich and fulfilling sex life. After a mastectomy, you and your partner may want to discuss some strategies for reinitiating your intimacy.

You might find some potions are not as comfortable as others now. Many women are more self-conscious being “on top” after a mastectomy, because their missing breast is more visible to their partner. Positions that put a lot of weight on the chest and shoulders, particularly if the surgery extended to the lymph nodes under the arm, should be avoided. Be sure to use plenty of pillows to make yourself comfortable and cushion any tender or sore areas as you recover.

It is important to try to be open with your partner and share your feelings. Together, the two of you will be able to make the necessary adjustments so you can continue a fulfilling and stimulating sexual relationship. If it’s difficult for you to talk to each other about sex, or cancer, or both, you may want to speak to a counselor who can help you communicate more openly. Types of counselors who can help include psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, marriage counselors, and sex therapists.
