Breast Cancer

Breast Stimulation

Is vigorous breast stimulation OK?

Yes. If your breasts are not too tender or sore after treatment, there is no reason why your partner cannot massage and caress them. A lot of misinformation exists about the relation between breast touching and illness. Some people think that breast stimulation can activate estrogen in the body or cause cancer cells to move around. These beliefs are not true.

Be sure to let your partner know that there is no danger in massaging your breast. It’s also important to tell your partner that touching had nothing to do with your getting cancer, and that there is no danger to either of you from touching during and after treatment. Even if you are having or have had external radiation therapy, your partner will not “catch” radiation from you.
