Breast Cancer

Lumpy Breasts and Risk

I have very lumpy breasts. Does this mean I will develop breast cancer or am at high risk?

Many women have breast lumpiness or a certain bumpy texture. This lumpiness, which may be accompanied by pain or tenderness during certain times of the month is called fibrocystic breast changes.

These changes are a normal part of the menstrual cycle. Fibrocystic breast changes often are most evident right before your period begins, during the premenstrual phase of your cycle. Post-menopausal women who are taking hormones are also likely to feel fibrocystic breast changes.

It is important to realize that your breasts change throughout your cycle. You need to become familiar with how your breasts feel during the various parts of your cycle, so that you recognize what is normal for you. By becoming familiar with the normal feeling of your breasts, you will be able to recognize changes when and if they occur.
