Breastfeeding

Does breastfeeding if you have a breast tumor increase your child’s risk of cancer?

No. Studies have shown that there is no risk of passing cancer cells through breast milk. Because cancer cells are not present in breast milk, the cancer cells cannot be passed to a breastfed infant.

However, if you are being diagnosed or treated with radiation therapy or treated with chemotherapy for a breast tumor, consult your doctors about the safety of nursing your infant before making any decision about breastfeeding. Radioactive isotope medications and certain chemotherapy medications are powerful medications that may enter the breast milk and could harm a breastfed child. By being fully informed, you can make the best decision about breastfeeding for you and your child.
