Schlerosing Adenosis

What is schlerosing adenosis?

Schlerosing adenosis is a benign condition of the breast in which extra tissue develops within the breast lobules, the small sacs in the breast that can produce milk. Sclerosing adenosis often can provoke recurring pain that tends to be linked to the menstrual cycle. Frequently, sclerosing adenosis results in a small, firm lump in the breast.

Schlerosing adenosis typically is detected during routine mammograms or following breast surgery. A biopsy often is required to confirm the diagnosis, because the condition is otherwise difficult to distinguish from breast cancer. Having schlerosing adenosis does not increase your risk of developing breast cancer, but it is important to be aware of any future changes or developments in your breasts. As with all matters of the breasts, vigilant attention is key.
