Ploidy refers to the number of chromosomes in a cell. Normal somatic cells (i.e., cells other than eggs and sperm) that have a normal number of chromosomes and cancer cells that have a normal number of chromosomes are called diploid.
Abnormal somatic cells and cancer cells that have more or fewer than the normal number of chromosomes are termed aneuploid. Aneuploid cancers are more likely to spread in the body than are diploid cancers. Approximately 66% of breast cancer cells are aneuploid.
