To provide better resolution (i.e., clearer viewing and, thus, improved interpretation) of images, some CT scans involve the use of one of several contrast dyes (also called contrast media) that can be introduced into the body by being injected intravenously (IV; i.e., into a vein).
A potential side effect of certain contrast dyes, however, is an allergic reaction.
If a contrast dye was injected during a CT scan, drinking lots of fluid after the scan helps to eliminate the contrast dye from the body.
