Wire localization is a method that can be used to help locate a mass during a surgical biopsy of breast tissue that looked suspicious on a mammogram.
Anesthesia may be used for a wire localization and surgical biopsy of the breast. During the wire localization procedure, x-rays are performed to help guide a thin, hollow needle into the appropriate region of the breast. Then a fine wire containing a small hook at the lower end is placed through the center of the needle into the breast tissue. Next, the hollow needle is removed.
By using the path of the wire as a guide, the surgeon is aided in finding the abnormal area to be removed surgically as the biopsy specimen. |
