Breast Engorgement in Lactating Women  

What is breast engorgement?

Within the first few days after childbirth, as the mother’s breasts begin to produce milk, engorgement of i.e., swelling due to unreleased milk in) the mother’s breasts may occur.[1] Symptoms of breast engorgement in a woman who is lactating (i.e., producing milk) may include:

• Swelling of the breasts
• Hardness of the breasts
• Redness of the breasts
• Soreness of the nipples
• Discomfort or pain in rest of the breasts
• Heavy feeling of the breasts
• Hot feeling of the breasts
• Difficulty in having the milk flow out of the nipples
• Blood in the breast milk
