Excessive Lactation

What is excessive lactation?

Excessive lactation is the production of more milk than is needed for breastfeeding a child.[1] In women who experience excessive lactation after childbirth and who breastfeed their infants, usually the supply of breast milk normalizes within several months. Some women experience lactation (i.e., production of breast milk) even though they are not breastfeeding a child.

Many ways are available to help manage and treat excessive lactation. See our Q&A called Treatment of Excessive Lactation.
