Treatment of Galactorrhea in Women

Is there anything that can be done to treat galactorrhea in women?

Yes. Galactorrhea in women is lactation (the production of milk) when the woman is neither pregnant nor breast-feeding a child. If you are experiencing galactorrhea, consult your physician for diagnosis and appropriate therapy. Treatment of galactorrhea depends on the underlying cause of the condition.

For example, medication-induced galactorrhea is treated by reducing the dose or changing the type of medication. Galactorrhea caused by abnormally low secretion of the hormone, thyroxin, by the thyroid gland may be treated by administration of thyroxin. If the galactorrhea is due to a tumor of the pituitary gland, the pituitary tumor may be treated. Other underlying conditions are treated appropriately.
