Use of Alternative Medicine by Cancer Patients

Do a lot of cancer patients use alternative medicines?

Yes. Recent studies have shown that as many as 80% of cancer patients are using or have tried alternative treatments in conjunction with their standard therapeutic regime in the hope of either enhancing the effectiveness of the regime or reducing its side effects.

Unfortunately, many of these patients were taking alternative medicine without letting their mainstream doctors know. This is a major no-no. Because of potential interactions with traditional medications, chemotherapy drugs in particular, you should never start taking any alternative medications without discussing it with your traditional doctor first. Just because a product is labeled “all-natural” does not mean that it is free of potential harm. This potential drawback of certain supplements — as well as for standard therapies — is one of the major reasons why many mainstream doctors are wary of alternative medicine.
