Curcumin

Can curcumin be used as a supplement to prevent breast cancer?

Yes, curcumin, the yellow ingredient in the spice, turmeric, can be used as a supplement for prevention of breast cancer. Although there is no definitive scientific evidence supporting curcumin's or turmeric’s ability to help prevent breast cancer, there is a great deal of anecdotal evidence suggesting this benefit.

Curcumin has been researched extensively for its possible anti-cancer properties. Studies suggest that curcumin may help slow the spread of cancer by inhibiting the enzyme, ornithine decarboxylase(ODC). ODC is one of the molecules that help our bodies produce a class of proteins called polyamines. Polyamines act like cheerleaders for cancer cells, helping them to grow stronger and replicate faster. So by slowing the production of polyamines, curcumin helps slow the growth of cancer cells.

As with any supplements or alternative or complementary therapies, be sure to first consult with your integrative healthcare professional and your oncologist.
