No one knows what causes breast cancer. But we do know that a woman’s risk of developing the disease is compounded by many factors — her age, genetic predisposition, age at start of menstruation, etc.
Unfortunately, there are several factors that are either very difficult to control or are beyond a woman’s control. These uncontrollable factors include race, family history of cancer, as well as aspects of a woman's personal and medical history, including past diseases, such as uterine and ovarian cancers. A woman's personal and medical history also includes her current age, how old she was when she had her first child, her age at the onset of menstruation and menopause, etc.
The good news is that many risk factors can be controlled, such as exercise, diet, and restriction or avoidance of alcohol and tobacco.
