Skin Irritation During Radiation Therapy

Is there anything I can do to help alleviate skin irritation during radiation therapy?

Yes. The following guidelines will help minimize skin irritation during radiation therapy:

  • Try not to scratch, rub or scrub the treated area.

  • Do not use any soaps, lotions, deodorants, sun blocks, medicines, perfumes, cosmetics, talc powder or other substances on the treated area within 2 hours of treatment.

  • Wear loose, soft, cotton clothing over the treated area. Avoid tight-fitting, scratchy clothing, which can irritate the treated area.

  • Do not apply heat or cold to the treated area.

  • Avoid hot or cold water (including heating pads or ice packs). Wash the treated area with lukewarm water.

  • Protect the treated area from sun exposure.

  • If you must shave, use an electric razor on the treated area. Do not use shaving lotion or hair-removal products.

  • Do not use adhesive tape on treated skin. If you must bandage the area, use paper tape and apply it outside of the treated area.
