| If I have radiation therapy, will I still be able to have children? |
Yes. The tiny scatter doses of radiation which may reach the ovaries during radiation treatment of the breast are not enough to interfere with a woman’s fertility or even impact her menstrual cycle.
Nevertheless, doctors disagree on how soon a woman should wait after radiation therapy before trying to get pregnant. Some doctors believe that no waiting period is necessary. Many doctors recommend that you wait about 2 years after treatment before trying to get pregnant. Other doctors suggest that their patients wait longer. Any recommendation to wait before becoming pregnant is more about making sure that you are past the highest risk period of breast cancer recurrence, than it is prompted any concerns about scatter doses having impacted the function of the ovaries.
