Erythropoietin (EPO)  

What is erythropoieitin?

Erythropoeitin (abbreviated EPO) is a molecule that encourages the bone marrow to produce more red blood cells.

Some patients with anemia (a low level of red blood cells) due to a side effect of chemotherapy are treated with the biological medication, Procrit (generic name, epoetin alfa), which is an injectable version of erythropoetin.
