Oprelvekin

What is oprelvekin?

Oprelvekin is the generic name of the brand-name medication, Neumega. An injectable biological medication, oprelvekin is based on interleukin-11, a molecule that stimulates the growth of certain cells in the bone marrow and maturation of platelets (a type of cell that normally helps the blood to clot after an injury has occurred).

Some patients with thrombocytopenia (i.e., a low level of platelets) due to a side effect of chemotherapy are treated with oprelvekin. Raising the platelet count in patients with thrombocytopenia can restore the normal ability of the blood to clot.
