Interleukin-11 is a molecule that stimulates the growth of certain cells in the bone marrow and maturation of platelets (a type of cell that normally helps the blood to clot after an injury has occurred).
The brand-name medication, Neumega (generic name, oprelvekin) is an injectable biological medication based on interleukin-11. Some patients with thrombocytopenia (i.e., a low level of platelets) due to a side effect of chemotherapy are treated with Neumega.
Raising the platelet count in patients with thrombocytopenia can restore the normal ability of the blood to clot.
