Fatigue During Chemotherapy

Why am I experiencing fatigue during my chemotherapy treatment?

Fatigue (i.e., feeling tired or weak) is a common complaint of women undergoing follow-up adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer. Some types of chemotherapy can cause fatigue as a side effect.

Symptoms of fatigue may include:

• Feeling tired
• Feeling weak or a loss of energy
• Inability to concentrate
• Lack of interest in activities

Some chemotherapy drugs also can cause the following conditions, which can result in fatigue:

• Anemia (a low level of red blood cells resulting in inadequate amounts of oxygen going to the lungs and other parts of the body)

• Making the heart function less well

For information on managing fatigue during chemotherapy, see our Q&A called, "I am feeling tired during chemotherapy for breast cancer. Is there anything I can do to regain my energy?"
