Options for Breast Appearance After Mastectomy |
|
 |
|
|
I am considering having a mastectomy. What are my options for restoring the appearance of a breast after the mastectomy?
|
Women who undergo a mastectomy have many options regarding the appearance of a breast:
• Having reconstructive surgery of the breast during the mastectomy operation
• Having reconstructive surgery of the breast after recovery from the mastectomy operation
• Wearing a breast prosthesis (an artificial breast built into or placed into a brassiere)
• Choosing not to undergo reconstructive surgery and not to wear a breast prosthesis
If you are considering having a mastectomy and contemplating how to deal physically and emotionally with a missing breast, the following approaches may be helpful in your decision-making, your recovery, your self-image, and your overall wellbeing:
• Consult your surgical oncologist for advice on options that may be appropriate for you
• Consult your oncology nurse
• Consult a plastic surgeon experienced in reconstruction of the breast
• Be informed by reading information on reconstruction of the breast and breast implants. See our Q&A on reconstructive surgery of the breast.
• Talk with a psychologist or counselor about your feelings about the issues you are facing
• Join a breast cancer support group, and talk with other women who are facing or have faced the same situation
