Managing Sleepiness From Pain Medications

Is there anything that I can do to manage the sleepiness from pain medications?

Yes. Certain analgesics (i.e., pain medications) can produce sleepiness as a side effect. If you experience sleepiness from analgesics, consult your oncologist and oncology nurse for guidance.

Either of the following self-help methods can be considered for managing the side effect of sleepiness from pain medications:[1]

• When possible, schedule a rest just following taking the analgesic. This approach will help you achieve normal sleep patterns at night.

• Drink a caffeine-containing beverage at the same time that you take the analgesic. Be sure to consult your oncologist and oncology nurse first to determine if drinking a caffeine-containing beverage is appropriate for you.
