What is an adverse event?

An adverse event is a medical condition that occurs in a patient during a clinical trial (i.e., study). Possible causes of the adverse event include:

• Medical condition that is unrelated to the original diagnosis of the patient and/or the treatment
• Symptom of the disease for which the patient was diagnosed and is participating in the trial
• Side effect of treatment
