An anti-estrogen is a class of drug that can block some of the effects of estrogen. For example, some anti-estrogen drugs work by blocking the growth-stimulating effects of estrogen on cancer cells containing receptors for estrogen. When estrogen-dependent breast cancer cells are "starved," their multiplication is inhibited.
Megace (generic name, megestrol) is an example of an anti-estrogen drug used to treat breast cancer patients.
