Oophorectomy is the surgical removal of the ovaries, which is one of the methods of ovarian ablation (i.e., prevention of function of the ovaries).
Some women with hormone-dependent breast cancer of Stage I and higher undergo oophorectomy as post-surgical treatment in order to stop the secretion of sex hormones (e.g., estrogen) by the ovaries, which otherwise could stimulate the growth of the tumor.
