Cyclophosphamide is the generic name of the brand-name drug, Cytoxan, which is a synthetic version of one of the types of chemotherapeutic drugs known as alkylating agents. In cancer cells, cyclophosphamide binds to DNA, suppressing synthesis of DNA. The treated cancer cells, which are blocked from multiplying, become destroyed.
Some women with breast cancer of Stage I and higher receive adjuvant (i.e., post-surgical) treatment with cyclophosphamide alone or in combination with other types of chemotherapeutic drugs.
