Fluoropyrimidines are a type of chemotherapeutic drug. Examples of chemotherapeutic drugs that are fluoropyrimidines are:
• 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)
• Capecitabine
Inside cancer cells, the fluoropyrimidines are converted to related chemicals that block the synthesis of DNA, RNA, and protein and inhibit the multiplication of the cancer cells.
Some women with breast cancer of Stage I and higher receive adjuvant (i.e., post-surgical) treatment with a fluoropyrimidine alone or in combination with other types of chemotherapeutic drugs.
