Vinca alkaloids are a type of chemotherapeutic drug. Examples of chemotherapeutic drugs that are vinca alkaloids are:
• Navelbine (generic name, vinorelbine)
• Vinblastine
• Vincristine
Inside cancer cells, vinca alkaloids work by interfering with intracellular structures involved in the cell cycle, thereby blocking multiplication of cancer cells.
Some women with breast cancer of Stage IIIB and higher or recurrent breast cancer receive adjuvant (i.e., post-surgical) treatment with a vinca alkaloid alone or in combination with other types of chemotherapeutic drugs.
