Vinblastine is a type of chemotherapeutic drug known as a vinca alkaloid. Inside cancer cells, vinblastine interferes with structures involved in the cell cycle, thereby blocking multiplication of the cancer cell. Also, treatment with vinblastine blocks synthesis of DNA, RNA, proteins, and lipids inside cancer cells; inhibits respiration of cancer cells; and suppresses other metabolic processes in cancer cells.
Some women with breast cancer of Stage IIIB and higher or recurrent breast cancer receive adjuvant (i.e., post-surgical) treatment with vinblastine alone or in combination with other types of chemotherapeutic drugs.
