 Breast Cancer

Implants Properly Screened

I have breast implants. How can I get properly screened?

If you have breast implants, be sure to tell your mammography facility that you have them. You will need an x-ray technician who is trained in screening patients with implants. This is important because breast implants can hide some breast tissue, which could make if difficult for the radiologist to detect breast cancer when looking at your mammograms.

A small risk exists that having a mammogram might damage an implant. For most women with implants, however, the benefits of breast screening outweighs the small risk of implant damage.
