Mammograms are the best screening tool available for detecting breast cancer, but they are not fool-proof. Up to 13% of the mammograms indicate that there is a cancer but when investigated (when a biopsy is taken) there is no evidence of cancer. This is called a false positive result. Up to 20% of mammograms miss a cancer that is really there. This is called a false negative result. |
