Skin-sparing Mastectomy

What is a skin-sparing mastectomy?

Women who want to have a more realistic-looking breast reconstruction often opt to have a skin-sparing mastectomy. This type of surgery only removes what tissue has to be eliminated to keep the breast cancer from spreading. Therefore, the tumor, nipple, areola, and the incision area (the place where skin was cut and sewn back together) from your biopsy are removed. Unlike other types of mastectomies, a skin-sparing mastectomy leaves more breast skin intact to better accommodate a soft tissue reconstruction or an implant.
