Cytoxan (generic name, cyclophosphamide) is a brand-name for a synthetic version of one of the type of chemotherapeutic drugs known as alkylating agents. In cancer cells, Cytoxan binds to DNA, suppressing synthesis of DNA. The treated cancer cells, which are blocked from multiplying, become destroyed.
Some women with breast cancer of Stage I and higher receive adjuvant (i.e., post-surgical) treatment with Cytoxan alone or in combination with other types of chemotherapeutic drugs.
