5-FU, the abbreviation for 5-fluorouracil, is a fluoropyrimide type of chemotherapeutic drug. Inside cancer cells, 5-FU is converted to related chemicals that block the synthesis of DNA, RNA, and protein and inhibit the multiplication of the cancer cells.
Some women with breast cancer of Stage I and higher receive adjuvant (i.e., post-surgical) treatment with 5-FU alone or in combination with other types of chemotherapeutic drugs.
