Risk Factors in Men  

What puts a man at risk for breast cancer?

No one knows for certain what causes breast cancer in men. However, the risk for breast cancer in a man are throught to be increased by several factors, including:

  • Klinefelter's syndrome, a rare genetic condition

  • Testicular dysfunction and other conditions causing hormone imbalance

  • Previous radiation treatment to the chest

  • Family history (male or female) of breast cancer. For example, mutations (abnormalities) in the BRCA2 gene may increase the risk.

  • Age. The average age at diagnosis of men with breast cancer is 65.
