Terms for Degree of Spread

What are terms other than the numerical staging categories used for assessing how far the cancer has spread?

Once you have been diagnosed with breast cancer, one of the first things your doctor needs to assess is how far the breast cancer has spread. The spread of breast cancer is described in the following terms:

  • Local: This means that the cancer is contained within the breast.

  • Regional: This means that the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes, usually those located under the armpit.

  • Distant: This means that the cancer has spread to other parts of the body.
