A fibroadenoma is the most common type of non-cancerous (i.e., benign) tumor of the breast.[1] Every year in the U.S., approximately half a millon women are diagnosed with fibroadenomas.[2] The presence of a fibroadenoma does not increase the risk of breast cancer.[1]
However, symptoms of fibroadenomas may include pain and an abnormal appearance of the breast.[1] Fibroadenomas that cause symptoms can be treated by:[1, 2]
• Surgical removal of the tumor
• Cryoablation (i.e., treating the tumor by freezing it). After cryoablation, the tumor shrinks progressively and ultimately disappears.
