Core needle biopsy (also called needle core biopsy or core biopsy) uses a needle to remove a small cylinder of tissue from the lump. In some cases, the physician uses imaging methods, such as ultrasonography (i.e., ultrasound examination) or computed tomography scanning (i.e., a CT scan), to help locate the mass and achieve the most precise placement of the needle.
The small specimen of tissue removed is sent to a laboratory for analysis under the microscope.
