An x-ray as an imaging and diagnostic method involves part of the body being exposed to a low level of external radiation produced by an instrument. Other parts of the body that are not to be exposed to the external radiation may be covered with a protective shield.
During an x-ray, the low level of radiation passes through the body and exposes a piece of light-sensitive film. When the exposed film is developed in a photography darkroom, the film shows an image of the shape of the relevant parts of the body and the internal organs in those parts of the body.
