A scintillation camera is a special type of camera that takes images of organs of the body during the diagnostic procedure known as a nuclear medicine scan.
In a nuclear medicine scan. small amounts of radioactive material (a radioisotope) are injected into the blood in order to image organs (such as the brain and the bones). The injected radioisotope accumulates in certain organs of the body.
After the images taken by the scintillation camera are displayed, a nuclear medicine physician (a doctor specializing in the use of radioisotopes for the diagnosis and treatment of disease) or a radiologist (a doctor specializing in the use of radiation for the diagnosis of disease) reads and interprets the images to determine whether there are areas of disease in the organs. |
