Anti-metabolite (also called antimetabolite) drugs are a class of chemotherapeutic drugs that block some steps in metabolism (i.e, production or breakdown) of certain molecules in the body. The inhibition of production of certain molecules (such as proteins and DNA) and the suppression of breakdown of other molecules can stop the multiplication of cells.
Methotrexate is an example of an anti-metabolite type of chemotherapeutic drug.
Some women with breast cancer of Stage I and higher receive adjuvant (i.e., post-surgical) treatment with an anti-metabolite drug alone or in combination with other types of chemotherapeutic drugs.
