What is a Phase IV clinical trial?

A Phase IV clinical trial of a new treatment is a study in patients that is performed after the new treatment has been approved by a regulatory agency (such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration). The purpose of the Phase IV trial is to determine further information about the safety and effectiveness of the treatment in a large number of patients with the same disease.
