Risk Factors in Men

What puts a man at risk for breast cancer?

No one knows for certain what causes breast cancer in men. However, several factors are thought to increase a man's risk, including:
  • Klinefelter's syndrome, a rare genetic condition

  • Testicular dysfunction and other conditions causing hormone imbalance

  • Previous radiation treatment to the chest

  • Family history (male or female) of breast cancer. Some evidence exists that mutations in BRCA2 or BRCA1 genes may contribute to risk.

  • Age. The average age at diagnosis of men with breast cancer is 65.
