Breast tissue is situated above the pectoralis major muscle, which is located on top of the chest wall and ribcage.

Types of tissues of the breast include:

Glandular tissue, which is involved in production and secretion of milk
Stromal tissue, which functions as supporting tissue
Lymphatic and immune system tissues, which remove cellular fluids, waste products of cells, and microbes

Glandular structures of the breast consist of:

Lobules, the glands which produce milk
Ducts, which are the tubes through which milk passes from the lobules to the nipple)

Stromal tissue of the breast includes:

The external portion of the nipple
