Gemcitabine

What is gemcitabine?

Gemcitabine hydrochloride is a chemotherapeutic drug of the type known as anti-metabolites. Anti-metabolite drugs block the production or breakdown of certain molecules in the body. Inside cancer cells, gemcitabine binds to DNA, blocks DNA synthesis, and causes the cancer cell to undergo apoptosis (i.e., programmed self-destruction of the cancer cell).

Some women with breast cancer of Stage IIIB and higher or recurrent breast cancer receive adjuvant (i.e., post-surgical) treatment with gemcitabine alone or in combination with other types of chemotherapeutic drugs.
