Mitomycin C is a chemotherapeutic drug. Inside cancer cells, mitomycin C changes the chemistry of DNA, causes cross-linking of DNA, blocks the synthesis of DNA, and inhibits the multiplication of the cancer cells. Also, mitomycin treatment of cancer cells results in the production of toxic substances inside the cancer cells.
Some women with breast cancer of Stage IIIB and higher or recurrent breast cancer receive adjuvant (i.e., post-surgical) treatment with mitomycin C alone or in combination with other types of chemotherapeutic drugs.
