Adjuvant Therapy

What is adjuvant therapy for cancer patients?

Adjuvant therapy for cancer patients is treatment given after there is no visible evidence of cancer due to the surgical removal of the tumor. The goals of adjuvant therapy for cancer patients are:

• To reduce the risk of local recurrence (i.e., re-occurrence in the affected organ)

• To eliminate any cancer cells that may already have spread from the tumor to other parts of the organ or to other parts of the body

Adjuvant therapy is administered to many breast cancer patients following surgery. For example, after lumpectomy (the surgical removal of a cancerous tumor of the breast) or mastectomy (the surgical removal of the affected breast), some breast cancer patients undergo:

• Adjuvant radiation therapy of the affected breast and/or chest wall

• Adjuvant chemotherapy (treatment with chemotherapy drugs)
