Patients Cured of Cancer  

What is meant by a patient being cured of cancer?

When a patient who was treated for a solid tumor (such as breast cancer) is said to be cured, it means that long-term remission of the disease was achieved, including all of the following goals:

• The tumor either was removed or has disappeared from the body

• All of the cancer cells have been eliminated from the body

• No signs of the tumor or the cancer cells have been detected for a significant period of time, which differs for the particular type of solid tumor


When a patient who was treated for a hematological malignancy (i.e., a cancer of cells of the blood) is said to be cured, it means that long-term remission of the disease was achieved, including all of the following goals:

• All of the cancer cells have been eliminated from the body

• No signs of the cancer cells have been detected for a significant period of time, which differs for the particular type of hematological malignancy
