Patients who undergo genetic testing for cancer also receive genetic counseling. Genetic testing for cancer looks for inherited genetic alterations (mutations) that may be linked with an increased risk of particular cancers, such as breast cancer and ovarian cancer.
The test is performed on a patient's blood sample. The sample is sent to a special laboratory where it is examined by lab technicians for the presence of mutations in genes associated with different types of cancers.
